2014 : Portrait show: Sleep and suspension

Brunswick Street Gallery: Group Portrait Show, November 2014

Vacant gazes, clouded expressions and patient suspensions of time dominate the feeling of these portraits. This small body of drawing work is reminiscent of my earlier portrait work as I transitioned from school to a more self-motivating adult life.  Lack of sleep is a main similarity in circumstance that comes to mind between these particular times in my life, and it is this temporary hiatus that evokes this emotion for me.  It is nice to see a repetition of style, as it reveals the changes that I can reflect upon - this series of women are more confident in themselves.  The visual element of their faces (the eyes) are not faded due to fear, aversion or uncertainty; but more so due to an inner peace which no longer seeks assurance from outer sources.
