2016 : Emerging Art Australia, group show

This small series of illustrative drawings focus on personal feelings reflective of mental health issues.  They cover feelings of personal sensitivity, where someone can feel unwell due to unseen circumstances.

In our society, there is no way for someone to express that they do not feel well enough to participate in everyday activities if it is purely their 'emotional-heart' that is feeling the strain.  The first image 'Sorry, but my heart hurts today' shows a woman holding her chest with closed eyes.  She sits in a peaceful solitude, nursing her wounds while enclosed by a starlit sky - symbolising hope and light in the darkness.  Leaves fall around her feet as symbols of tears that need not be cried, given that the woman can have time and space to heal.  Flowers grow from the ground making beauty of her fears & delicacy.

'Leap of Faith' shows a woman naively jumping into a pool of water, like a child instinctively throwing back their head.  She does not care to her well-being or safety, unguarded from learned precautions on how to 'do something properly'.  Sometimes in the joy of abandoned care, we just close our eyes, leap, and hope to land in a happy, safe place.  The eclipsed moon stands as a cautious viewer, and a protective supporter.

The last image 'Blurred into the Corner' shows anxiety and fear upon the face of someone who stood to include themselves in societal obligations.  To look pretty with hair done, earrings and makeup - she attempted to fit in, however found herself sitting uncomfortably at the edge of a lighted room, naked to her emotions.  Sometimes we need to sit out, sometimes we just need to be surrounded by strangers, and unfortunately things unravel in places we feel we cannot escape.  I like this piece to stand as a reminder that we can choose to stay home and look after ourselves, even when it appears our illnesses are unseen.
